Montealegre - Nausicaa

Nausicaa is a beautifully written and directed movie done by none other than Hayao Miyzaki. Of course this film was produced by Studio Ghibli, like usual. The movie was made in 1984 and has the original Japanese title of Kaze no tani no Naushika. It is easy to be seen by the viewer that much time and effort was put into this movie. Not only the visual aspects, but the plot and meaning of the entire movie are complex and have a very deep meaning. I may not understand the movie 100 percent, but I do know that whatever Hayao Miyazaki does with his work he has a reason for everything, especially in this film. Personally in my opinion, this is one of the more weird movies done by Miyazaki. Granted all of his movies could be considered a little out there, but for me this film was by far one of the most strange. I enjoyed the movie, though I would not watch it again. The movie is basically about being taking care of the earth to be put simply. The plot is much more complex then that simple statement, but that simple statement means a lot. As discussed in class, there are numerous problems happening with earth right now and most of it is being caused by people.  People are damaging the earth, and not making enough amends or repairs for what they are doing. In Nausicaa, the Fukai is filled with poisonous plants that can kill humans and this jungle covers a great bit of land. The Fukai is the way it is only because of what humans have done to it. It is not only the generation of the main character who has created this, but it has built up upon many, many generations of pollution. It is as if the earth is taking the bad that the humans have caused and is just spitting it back out. Though the jungle only continues to grow. I think Hayao Miyazaki was trying to point out that we must take care of our environment. Due to what humans have been doing, Earth is not a place that will continue to flourish. If we continue on as we are doing we are only destroying the earth, and forbidding it to heal itself and function properly. People need to take care of what is given to them, otherwise it will be there down fall.

  1. Illy,

You make a really interesting point about how if you boil it down, this movie is basically about taking care of the earth. I think you are so right! This movie is all about loving and taking care of the earth we live in, and the negative effects that come from our lack of that. It is really crucial that we start looking into and taking action to protect and save our earth, because the number of natural disasters are occurring more and more often, not to mention other human-caused conflicts. The cutting down of the rainforest, erosion of coral reefs, oil spills, and global warming through our carbon emissions are directly caused by humans, and these are issues that we need to attack first. Anyways, nice read and thanks for sharing your opinion on how much you liked/not liked the movie

  2. Illy, hi there, I like the way you talked about the ecological issues surrounding the movie. The way we treat the earth has a direct impact on us. We need to be careful what we do with the planet, it is the only one we have. We probably would not feel its full effects, but our grandchildren might. You have not seen the The Lorax right? Well it has the same idea as Nasuicaa: Of the Valley of the Wind. The idea of how greed can destroy the world around us. The Once-ler wants to chop down the trees to make his Thneeds. Once all the trees are gone, the earth becomes barren, and the air is really polluted. The same is for Nausicaa, the greed of the people one thousand years ago ravished the land and made it inhabitable.
