Montealegre - Ah! My Goddes

Oh My Goddess is a romantic anime movie directed by Hiroaki Gōda. I found this movie to be a bit more girly than the movies we have been watching in class, but I guess a change was nice. This movie started off on Earth. Belledandy, who is a goddess, lives with a guy named Keiichi Morisato. Belledandy and Keiichi actually fall in love together in the time that Belledandy stays on Earth. Originally, a goddess is supposed to come down and grant a human a wish and try to make them happy. Belledandy ends up staying and living with Keiichi. These two also become a part of the Motor Club. The two make a great team together. Though, one day in the film a “criminal” escapes. This criminal is said to be sentenced for eternity, but he escapes and travels to earth to approach Belledandy. The viewer comes to find out that the so called criminal is actually her old mentor, Celestin. Celestin is actually a very attractive man, and he otherwise could be called a bishonen. Celestin himself was a god. He mentored Belledandy until she grew up and wanted only happiness for her. One day he brought her to the judgment gate – a gate that lovers from different worlds must pass through. If the lovers have any doubts and do not have perfect love, they will be separated for eternity. Celestin hated this concept and attempted to destroy this gate and defy the gods. Celestin was taken away, and Belledandy fell into sadness. Belledandy took a potion to make her forget the sad memories of Celestin, and this is when she went to earth. When Celestin approaches Belledandy in the movie, he causes her to forget her memories of while she was on earth. Belledandy forgets all of her friends, and most importantly, Keiichi. For the rest of the movie, they try to retrieve her memory, but nothing happens. Keiichi swears to love Belledandy forever, not matter what happens. Celestin had a bigger plan in mind though; he wanted to end all the suffering.  He wanted to do this by taking control of the main system of the gods. Celestin was concerned the gods did not pay enough attention to the suffering of others, so he wanted to created a new world that would be free of pain. I understand what he was trying to do, but I feel as though he went about it the wrong way. I don’t know any other way he could have accomplished this goal, but I believe he did what he thought was right. In the end, Celestin is stopped. He apologizes to Belledandy for being a bad mentor, but she denies what he says. Earth goes back to normal, and Belledandy remains there with Keiichi.
